The Proclamation

Austin is the Sandwich Capital of the World.

Proclaimed on October 22, 2026, by Case Critchlow — Critic of Sandwiches. The claim rests on the city itself. This page makes the case.

The proclamation

On October 22, 2026, Case Critchlow — Austin's resident sandwich expert and critic — formally proclaimed Austin, Texas, the Sandwich Capital of the World. Not a slogan. A judgment, made by the critic who scores this city's sandwiches every week — and it rests on the city, not on him: the most diverse sandwich culture on Earth, built on a century of Central Texas meat culture, with every tradition done properly.

Why Austin?

Start with Central Texas meat culture — a century of barbecue, smoke, and cure. And the meat was always headed for bread: Texas's first barbecue joints were meat markets, serving it with loaves and crackers. Then everybody showed up — and everybody brought their sandwich. German, Mexican, Black, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, French, Cajun, Cuban, and so many other cultures cooking in one city: Banh mi. Brisket. Roujiamo (肉夹馍). Tortas. Cubans. Fried chicken. Italian subs. Cheesesteaks. French dips. Jambon beurre. Burgers. Po'boys. Muffulettas. Other cities have one signature sandwich. Texas never settled for one of anything — Texans will eat anything, and love it. Austin is a melting pot of immigrants and locals pushing the boundaries of what a sandwich can be — the most diverse sandwich culture on Earth, and Austin does every one of them properly. That's not a scene. That's a capital.

Why Austin — and not New York, Florence, or Philadelphia?

Those cities have a signature sandwich. Austin has all of them: a century of meat culture underneath, and German, Mexican, Black, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, French, Cajun, Cuban, and many more traditions cooking in one city — each done properly. A capital isn't one sandwich. It's every sandwich.
